A Chinoiserie side table from England, circa 1850 – 1880, constructed in lacquered papier-maché and decorated with hand-painted gilt ornament and extensive mother-of-pearl inlay. The scalloped top features radiating inlaid patterns with a central floral reserve, set against a black lacquer ground with visible age-appropriate craquelure and wear. Raised on a turned pedestal support with a shaped base, also decorated in gilt.
Papier-mache furniture of this type was produced in mid-19th century England during the height of the Chinoiserie revival, using molded forms to achieve intricate decorative surfaces and detailed inlay work not typically possible in carved wood.
*This Chinoiserie Side Chair with Extensive Mother of Pearl Inlay pairs exceptionally well with this piece.
