This elegant Austrian Biedermeier display cabinet was skillfully built by hand nearly 200 years ago, circa 1830. Its remarkable condition and smooth, stable functionality make its age almost difficult to believe.
The cabinet is beautifully veneered in richly figured burlwood, contrasted by ebonized architectural details. The glazed door features sweeping ebonized tracery with gilt rosette mounts and has a removable silk curtain. It opens to reveal a beautifully patterned silk-lined interior fitted with three glass display shelves. A broad lower drawer, pedimented top and distinctive faceted ebonized corner blocks give the cabinet a strong architectural presence despite its relatively compact proportions. The restrained yet striking contrast between the warm burlwood, black ebonized elements and gilt accents is characteristic of high-quality Viennese Biedermeier furniture.
Exceptionally well preserved for a cabinet approaching its third century, it remains sturdy, functional and eminently usable today – a particularly fine example of truly enduring craftsmanship.
