This attractive armoire has a shaped cornice with central medallion, fluted pilasters, and symmetrical paneled doors – all characteristics consistent with the refined aesthetic of the Louis XVI period. However, its short cabriole legs – a hallmark of the earlier Louis XV style – bring enough softness that it suggests this is either transitional design or provincial influence.
Constructed in solid French walnut with pegged joinery, it retains its original hardware and a deep, beautiful patina. The interior is upholstered and fitted with three shelves, one of which has three small drawers, and with a full-width drawer at the base. Circa 1780.
