Fritz Henningsen: Master of Timeless Craftsmanship
Henningsen (1889–1965) began his career at 22, completing an apprenticeship with renowned cabinetmaker I.P. Mørck in 1911. He spent several years traveling through Germany, France, and Great Britain, honing his skills and drawing inspiration before returning to Copenhagen in 1915 to establish his own furniture shop. A perfectionist with a deep understanding of customer needs, Henningsen became a prominent figure in the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild, where he reinterpreted traditional styles like French Empire, Rococo, and 17th-century British furniture with remarkable craftsmanship and modern sensibility.
Though influenced by his teacher Kaare Klint, Henningsen developed a distinct style that evolved from historically inspired designs to simpler, timeless pieces. This evolution is best embodied in his iconic Heritage and Signature Chairs. With an unwavering commitment to quality, Henningsen prioritized the furniture itself over fame, ensuring his work remains celebrated for its elegance, functionality, and enduring appeal.
