A large eight-panel Chinese lacquer screen, early 20th century, decorated with an expansive landscape of flowering branches, bamboo, rocks, and birds in flight. The imagery is executed in a combination of carved low-relief panels and inset painted decoration, where colour is applied within recessed outlines rather than inlaid materials. The black lacquer ground is enriched with gilt accents and finely incised detailing that defines blossoms, foliage, feathers, and bark textures, and peonies, magnolia buds, bamboo clusters, and quail animate the scene.
