A French transitional (taking style elements from both Louis XV & Louis XVI) commode (chest of drawers or dresser), circa 1870–1890. The shaped marble top rests above three short drawers and three long drawers, all faced with vibrant chevron and herringbone marquetry executed in Kingwood. The design balances the curving cabriole legs of the Louis XV tradition with the geometric veneer patterns and restrained neoclassical ornament of Louis XVI. The corners are mounted with finely cast ormolu of laurel wreaths and classical motifs, while gilt-bronze ring pulls and escutcheons adorn the drawers, and cabriole legs terminate in matching sabots.
