A French Transitional style commode featuring gilt bronze ormolu mounts, a marble top, intricate marquetry inlay with geometric patterns, and a central image of a cherub writing in a book surrounded by a decorative frame. The cherub is a classical motif, symbolizing knowledge, creativity, and protection. Beneath the medallion, there’s a decorative gilt bronze bow ornament.

Transitional style furniture bridges the decorative elements of King Louis XV (Rococo) and King Louis XVI (Neoclassical) styles. For example, this commode has cabriole legs, typically associated with Louis XV, as they feature the graceful curves typical of Rococo design, but they’re more restrained here, suggesting a step toward the straighter legs of Louis XVI. Also, the shape of the piece combines the curves of Louis XV with the symmetry and straight lines associated with Louis XVI.
