Bouillotte lamp in ormolu (gilt bronze) with swan forms making up its three arms, original tole lampshade, and beautiful detail throughout. The height of the shade is adjusted by a set screw in the shape of an arrow, with a wreath topping off the adjustment spindle. Works perfectly.
Bouillotte lamps are named gambling card game that was very popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. A lamp like this would be placed in the center of the table to illuminate the table, but to avoid having the glow of the candles open flames in players eyes, they needed to be able to lower the lamp shade as the candles burned down through the night.
