This large-scale French mahogany bibliothèque bookcase dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and reflects the disciplined, architectural character of the Empire style. Constructed from solid mahogany, the bookcase features a tall glazed upper section with arched doors and original beveled glass, and adjustable shelving for books or display, above a lower cabinet fitted with paneled doors concealing storage shelves. It’s further enriched throughout with finely cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, including rosettes, foliate drops, and escutcheons – all original and of exceptional quality.
The piece is engineered in six interlocking sections, secured with iron bolts, allowing for easier transport and installation while maintaining structural rigidity once assembled. This method of construction was common for large French case pieces intended for townhouses, libraries, and formal interiors. The proportions are imposing yet balanced, with strong cornice molding and a plinth base.
