This striking English Regency mahogany bookcase, dating to the early 19th century (circa 1820–1835), features a two-part form with mirrored doors top and bottom. Constructed in flame mahogany and raised on lion paw feet, the cabinet’s bold geometry and restrained ornament place it firmly within the English Regency tradition. The wooden X-form glazing bars are centered by gilt bronze Medusa mounts.
In the context of Regency furniture, the Medusa mount isn’t just decorative – it’s drawn from classical antiquity as a symbol of protection from evil and strength, while also lending the piece an air of mysticism.
