A late-20th-century Chinese scholar’s display shelf made from a dense Asian hardwood with grain characteristic of the highly coveted chicken-wing wood (jichimu). The tight, high-contrast streaking – from warm brown to near-black – is typical of the heavy tropical hardwoods used in higher-quality workshop production of the period.
The asymmetrical open shelves follow traditional scholar’s furniture, designed for displaying objects in a cultivated studio setting. Shaped side openings echo classic lattice forms, while the carved roundels incorporate the shòu (longevity) motif. Below are two solid-wood drawers and four cabinet doors. Exceptionally heavy and structurally robust, the piece represents quality late-20th-century hardwood furniture rather than mass-market export cabinetry.
