A rare lacquered coffee table from Maison Gouffé of Paris, circa 1920, featuring a striking dragon and phoenix design. The top is decorated in polychrome lacquer with a dramatic scene of a dragon and phoenix among lotus blossoms and swirling clouds, framed by a geometric border. The imagery (symbolic of strength, harmony, and imperial balance) is executed with intricate linework and subtle layers of colored lacquer.
The table stands on straight legs with shaped feet, its restrained form allowing the elaborate decoration to dominate. A brass maker’s label Gouffé is affixed beneath, confirming its production by the esteemed Parisian firm known for fine furniture of the late 19th and early 20th century.
