An English figured walnut ‘Davenport’ desk fitted with four graduated drawers to one side with opposing false drawers, the leather top opening to reveal smaller drawers, the top back with further fitted with lidded compartment. Inlaid with contrasting stringing and floral motifs in boxwood and ebony. Circa 1870.
A Davenport desk, (sometimes originally known as a Devonport desk) is a small desk with an inclined lifting desktop attached with hinges to the back of the body. This desk owes its name to a Captain Davenport who was the first to commission the design, from Gillows of Lancaster, near the end of the 18th century.
