A lovely bonnetiere from Brittany, with gorgeous hand carvings throughout. The slender, smaller size makes a “bonnetiere” highly sought after for today’s home, as they can easily be placed in a variety of locations. The style, dark finish, and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life. All of these Breton carved features are present in this cabinet.
Carved cabriole feet to the front, with practical, flat legs at the read so it can be easily set flush to a wall. Solid, heavy and strong; well built by craftsmen of the period, c. 1890.
